In Trittenheim, along an impressive bend of the Mosel river, lies the centuries-old domain where Eva Clüsserath-Wittmann makes her delicate but precise white wines. The Clüsserath family has been in the wine business since 1670, but it is under Eva’s reign that their output has truly climbed the ranks of international esteem. All of these wines are marked by her loving care of the sometimes ancient slate-soil family vines and her exceedingly patient vinifications on old wooden Fuder.
Ansgar Clüsserath ‘Vom Schiefer’ Riesling Trocken 2017
Vinification: Hand-harvested grapes, slow natural fermentation in old wooden vats, sur lie aging until June, filtration and light sulphiting before bottling.
Character: The 2017 ‘Vom Schiefer’ Riesling is a particularly mineral expression of Clüsserath’s Riesling. Generously wafting from the glass with aroma’s of slate, petrol, flowers and stone fruits. Lightweight, low-alcohol, firm acidic structure and nicely tucked-away touch of residual sugar: this is a prime example of a great food wine. Delicious with fresh but intense, slightly spicy dishes like raw spring rolls, ceviche and sushi. However, we know from experience that it packs enough punch to keep up with a rich Coq au Riesling!
