Lise et Bertrand Jousset ‘Premier Rendez-Vous’ Montlouis-sur-Loire 2017
Character: Lise and Bertrand’s benchmark Montlouis Chenin. Rich but precise juice that moves from creamy to salty in a straight line along the palate. The 2017 is singing right now, retaining a pretty core of primary white flower, yellow fruit and citrus aromas while complex developed notes (honey, baked apple, iodine) creep up along the edges. Profound and layered stuff that’s also fun and thirst-quenching.
Vinification: Biodynamically farmed Chenin Blanc from 8 different parcels. Part silex/sandy soils over limestone (vines average 40 years old) and part silex/clay over limestone (vines average 70 years old). Hand-harvest, direct-press of whole bunches, natural fermentation in separate parcels in used oak barrels. Aging on old barrels for 10 months, followed by assemblage of parcels and 2 months aging in tank. Bottled lightly filtered and sulphited (20-30 mg/L).
