Catherine and Pierre Breton: natural wine pioneers, masters of Bourgueil Cabernet Franc and close friends of Chabrol. Domaine Breton is a century-old family operation that has been bottling wines under their own name since 1985. In the late eighties they started their conversion to first organic and later biodynamic farming, and already in the early nineties they had fully adopted the “nothing added-nothing taken away” approach to winemaking. These bon-vivants are beloved throughout the wine world and their domaine is one of our favourite pit-stops during our wine trips.
‘Trinch!’ Bourgueil Catherine et Pierre Breton 2017
Vinification: Hand-harvested Cabernet Franc from 30 year-old vines on gravel soils. 18-day cold maceration and natural fermentation in tank, elevage in old barrels. Bottled unfitered with little to no added sulphites.
Character: ‘Trinch!’ means ‘Cheers!’ and is a wine that truly befits its name. Crunchy Cab Franc flavours of ripe black and red berries, bell pepper, herbs and earth, framed in a juicy and easy drinking style. Light and thirst-quenching but with ample tannic grip. Works great with mixed charcuterie, grilled vegetables and roast pork. Perfect match: any marriage of beetroot with something roasted and meaty.
