Meo-Camuzet Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru Aux Boudots 2019

Boudots is the most northerly appellation of Nuits-St-Georges and neighbours on Vosne Malconsorts. Ideally situated on the lower part of the hill and facing eastward. The vines are quite old, since half of them were planted in the early 1950’s and the other half in the mid-1960’s. The grapes are concentrated and very small. They ripen very well and are resistant to rot in the years when it appears
A wine which is very typical of the appellation Vosne-Romanee. Its roundness, its fleshy plumpness, its discreet but effective structure. Its great maturity and its balance belie the reputation for austerity which goes with Nuits.

The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Boudots 1er Cru has powerful fruit flavor, and has taken the heat a little bit. There is a little toastiness at the finish, with the barrel making its presence felt.

Description

Meo Camuzet is one of the leading domaine in the Côte d’Or, based in Vosne-Romanee. As the successor to the late Henri Jayer, it is extremely popular with Burgundy lovers around the world.

The history of Meo Camuzet began in the early 1900s with Etienne Camuzet. At first, he leased out parts of his vineyard to various vine growers. When Jean-Nicolas Meo took over in 1986, only a small part of the vineyard was under the management of the domaine. He set the goal of bottling the grapes grown at the domaine under his own label.
Henri Jayer was one of the landholders. When he retired in 1988, he advised Jean-Nicolas to reacquire the vineyards. The vineyards now owned by Meo-Camuzet include part of the Clos Parantoux Premier Cru made famous by Jaillet. Jayer also personally instructed Jean-Nicolas on the winemaking methods.

The special feature of Meo-Camuzet is the quality and quantity of its premier vineyards. Its plots are in the best locations within each vineyard. The Clos de Vougeot plot is located just below the Chateau du Clos de Vougeot, and the Echezeaux plot is located at the top of the vineyard. The Richebourg plot is a large 1ha at the top of the vineyard too. The Corton plot is a monopole located to the south of Le Rognet on the Ladoix side.

Most of the vineyards are farmed as organically as possible. However, they are not certified as such, so that they can be cared for in the best way depending on the vintage.
All the grapes are hand-picked. They have been 100% destemmed, following Henri Jayer’s winemaking methods, but since 2004, they have been partially whole-cluster fermented. The wines have changed from a style that focuses on fruitiness to a more complex and elegant style. The Grand Cru and Premier Cru wines are aged for 18 months in 100% new oak barrels, while the other wines are aged in about 50% new oak. After that, they are bottled without filtration.

The philosophy of Meo Camuzet is to “fully express the characteristics of the soil, climate and region that are naturally created each year”. The wines reflect the inherent charm of the grapes, and have a sensual, velvety structure, complexity, richness, depth and enchanting aroma.
