Domaine Marcel Lapierre Morgon ‘Cuvée Camille’ 2022

It is fair to say that “Grand Morgon”. Incredible with layers of strawberry, cherry, cranberry, oak, leather, smoke, earthy, pepper… It shows wonderful depth of fruit flavor and length. Bourgogne Pinot competitor from Beaujolais.

With only 1.05ha in production, Cuvée Camille comes from an old parcel on the Côte du Py (south-west facing, shallow soil). The grapes go through the same meticulous stages as our Morgon, except that the vatting is longer and 100% in truncated-cone wooden vats. This cuvée was made when Camille Lapierre (Marcel’s daughter) came back to the domaine, but it’s also in honor of her grandfather Camille (Marcel’s father).

Semi-carbonic maceration without SO2 for 24 days in truncated wooden vats. Aged for 9 months in old 216L barrels. Unfiltered, but lightly sulfited when bottling.

In 1909, pioneer Michel Lapierre, born in a family of farmers, moves to Villié-Morgon with his wife Annette. He becomes “maître de chai” (cellar master) at Les Chênes. In 1950, their third son Camille is born. Until then, the Lapierre-wines continue to be bottled in Fleurie.

Camille decided to start to sell wines directly to bistrots in Lyon – a real visionary. He buys his first vineyards in 1960 and expands the Lapierre domain to 7ha. In 1973, Camille’s son Marcel starts to bottle his first wines. Inspired by Jules Chauvet, he uses no SO2 in the process. For more than three decades, Marcel and his wife Marie continue to work in a biodynamic fashion in Morgon, the Beaujolais village also considered as the birthplace of ‘natural wine’. Their wines are a must to try for Beaujolais-lovers!
