Montefalco is located in Umbria, in the province of Perugia, not far from famous places such as Assisi, Spoleto, and Bevagna. The region is known for its medieval villages, olive groves, and, of course, viticulture, with the powerful Sagrantino grape as its greatest pride.
The name Montefalco literally means “Falcon Mountain” and is derived from the Italian words monte (mountain) and falco (falcon). According to a famous legend, German Emperor Frederick II (1194-1250) visited this region and was impressed by the many falcons flying around the hills. As a passionate falconer, he is said to have given the town the name Montefalco.
The Riserva is produced exclusively in the best vintages, with an emphasis on the Sangiovese grape. Up to and including the 2015 harvest, the blend consisted of 70% Sangiovese; from 2016 onwards, this was increased to 80%. The grapes are hand-picked from vineyards located at altitudes between 300 and 400 meters, facing south to southwest. After careful vinification, the wine ages for a minimum of 18 months in large oak barrels, followed by a period of aging in cement tanks and at least 6 months of bottle aging.
The result is a deep ruby red wine with aromas of ripe red fruit, floral notes, and subtle spices. On the palate, the wine is structured yet digestible, with a firm and long finish. This Riserva is an excellent accompaniment to flavorful pasta dishes, grilled meats, and aged hard cheeses.
