About Blackbird Vineyards
The inspiration for the domain name derived from the french name for Merlot. Merlot is etymologically related to the word Merle, so with other words to blackbird. The birds love the grapes in Bordeaux and their tale looks like the shape of the bunches.
This 10-acre estate released its first vintage in 2003. Before that memorable moment, Blackbird Vineyard grapes were mainly sold to Mia Klein of Selene Wines and other A-class wineries. The 1999 vintage Selene Merlot was highly acclaimed by the top critics.
Michael Polenske – the current owner of Blackbird Vineyards made his first vintage of a small crush of grapes that wasn’t sold yet to other vintners. It was received as “the best Merlot nobody had ever heard of”.
About Oak Knoll
Oak Knoll is situated in the south of Napa Valley. Thanks to the cool breeze coming from the San Francisco Bay Oak Knoll has one of the coolest climates of Napa. The fresh air means that the fruit can ripen slowly and maintain its freshness while developing a soft, feminine mouthfeel.
Oak Knoll is Napa’s 14th AVA. The vineyards have a similar situation as the right bank from Bordeaux. The same soil composition, the microclimate and the landscape are reminiscing the classic country.
