Domaine Breton, based in Restigné, is an absolute cornerstone of the natural wine movement in the Loire. The estate is run by the iconic duo Catherine and Pierre Breton, who decided back in the 1980s to go against the tide of industrial agriculture. They have been working entirely organically since 1990, and in 1994 they switched to biodynamics. Their philosophy is simple yet radical: healthy soils and vital vines form the basis for wines that show where they come from, without fuss or heavy chemical additives.
The estate specializes in Cabernet Franc (often called Breton locally, a nice pun on their family name) from the Bourgueil and Chinon appellations, and white wines from Chenin Blanc in Vouvray. The Bretons are known for their ability to produce various styles: from the feather-light, juicy vin de soif meant to be drunk young and chilled, to the serious, complex cuvées from old vines on limestone soils that can age for decades. Each wine is vinified with indigenous yeasts and an absolute minimum of sulfur.
In addition to their craftsmanship in the cellar, Catherine and Pierre are known for their generous personalities and their role as mentors to a whole new generation of natural winemakers. With the arrival of their children, France and Paul, the future of the 15-hectare estate is secured. Together, they remain true to their motto: “Winemaking is guiding life.” Their wines grace the lists of the best wine bars worldwide and remain a favorite for those who appreciate purity, energy, and a touch of rebellious character.
