Francois Mitjavile
In a landscape that’s dominated by foreign investors and outside consultants, philosopher-winemaker François Mitjavile is a unique figure. For both of his estates, he counts as a winegrower, cellar master, and face of the company united in one person. After Mitjavile acquired the domain Tertre Roteboeuf (Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux) through his in-laws in the late 1970s, his output quickly branded him a favorite of the great wine critics (including Robert Parker).
A little later he bought the domain Roc de Cambes in Cotes de Bourg, where he also attracted attention with its typical combination of late grape harvest and intensive use of new oak wood. The ‘Domaine des Cambes’ wines are also produced here, but the grapes come from a slightly colder vineyard located just outside Cotes de Bourg, right on the Gironde river (as seen on the label’s image).
