Delightful artisanal Champagne and great introduction, also price-wise, to the world of Grower Champagnes. Delicate nose of white flowers and fresh red apple, plus more oxidative notes of dried red fruits, spice and iodine. On the palate it is bone-dry but not austere. Late-picked grapes and long aging sur lattes give volume and richness, all balanced by beautiful linear acidity and intense minerality.

Description

Vinification

Biodynamically farmed Pinot Meunier vines in different parcels, average 45 years old and situated with south/south-east exposure on silty clay-limestone soils. Hand-harvest at optimum ripeness, very slow pneumatic pressing, vinification of separate parcels in enamelled steel tanks. Still-wines are aged on the lees for 5 months, still in separate parcels. Reserve wines are aged for 12 months on fine lees. Blending of still wines and bottling without filtration. Second fermentation in the bottle with biodynamic yeasts, 36 months aging sur lattes before degorgement, no added dosage.

The current batch of ‘Pur Meunier’ is a blend of 2017/2018, degorged 8/2/2020.

Domaine Christophe Mignon

Christophe Mignon is a 5th generation winemaker who farms 6.5 hectares in Festigny (Vallée de la Marne), of which 90% is planted with Pinot Meunier. Aside from being one of the champions of pure Meunier Champagne, he is a fanatic elaborator of biodynamic principles in both the vineyard and the cellar. He works the soil manually, produces his own natural vineyard treatments with often self-invented machinery (no chemicals whatsoever in his vineyards), and observes the lunar calendar throughout his operations. Not afraid to experiment with insights gleaned from homeopathy, phytotherapy and geobiology, Mignon is convinced the best wines are produced by a harmony of modern and ancient methods.
