ItsasMendi
A small winery at the heart of Urdaibai, Bizkaia.

Bodega Itsasmendi was created in 1994 by a group of winegrowers whose initial aim was to produce a quality Txakoli that stood out in the general context of white wines and to convey the individual character of our winemaking region to the best of our ability.

Re-establishing a social-economic activity that is as important to Biscay as wine-growing has been in centuries past. Starting with three hectares in Muskiz, Bakio and Mendata, a winery was set up in Muskiz with a production capacity of 25,000 L. In 2003, the facilities were relocated to Gernika. These years were significant, not just for the way in which Itsasmendi Txacoli was recieved by the specialist press, restaurants and consumers, but also for the capacity to innovate in creating new products.

The winery is equipped with the latest technology for production of Txakoli, in order to enhance the original characteristics obtained in the vineyards and to enable the production team to achieve the maximum expression of the indigenous varieties Hondarrabi zuri and Hondarrabi zuri zerratie.

Origins that exude authenticity
Txakoli Itsasmendi is fruit of the coupage of the varieties Hondarrabi zuri and Hondarrabi zuri zerratie. The geological diversity and the microclimate of each plot, ecologically respectful viticulture and innovative oenology are the factors that determine the expression of this Txakoli. With an alcohol content of around 12%, naturally fresh on the palate, harmonious, rounded and lasting, with a slightly bitter, elegant finish and typical of the variety. Itsasmendi is a young Txakoli notable for its balance, freshness and harmony.

The Selection, a one-of-a-kind original 2020
Made since 2003 with two goals: to make a Txakoli that firstly has more body and structure using select grapes to accompany the exquisite gastronomy of the Basque Country and that secondly can last several years ageing in the bottle, like other vinicultural areas with highly regarded white wines. This Txakoli is broad and unctuous on the palate, where the acidity drives the ripeness with balance; it starts out powerful and flavoursome and matures in the bottle to acquire harmony, complexity and elegance with the passage of time. A Txakoli that transmits the variables occurring with each year of vintage with its own personality. Enjoy its evolution and possibilities for laying down.

Eklipse 2020
From the heart of a holm oak grove, a marriage of Pinot Noir and Hondarrabi Beltza
Within the framework of an R&D project in collaboration with the Council of Bizkaia and the D.O. Bizkaiko Txakolina called Agricultural and oenological behaviour of the varieties Pinot Noir and Hondarrabi Beltza. Vineyards: Vines more than 20 years old located in Gorliz (1 ha) and Muskiz (0.75 ha), within the area known as the Cantabrian holm oak groves (clay-loam soil with a limestone origin) of the varieties Pinot Noir and Hondarrabi Beltza. Climate: The proximity to the Bay of Biscay provides a microclimate with an average rainfall on the plots of around 931 mm/year.

Red fruit on the nose — red cherry and raspberry. Hint of violet and earth. Light bodied, with balanced acidity and tannins. Medium-long finish. This is a blend of Pinot Noir and a local Basque grape, which tampers some of the signature mushroomy, earth notes of Pinot Noir.

Artizar 2019
A North Star with a Cantabrian nerve
At Itsasmendi, we practice sustainable viticulture aiming to integrate the vineyard harmoniously into every ecosystem and, as a result, nature gives us grapes with a distinctive quality. Ongoing study of the ecological variables has led us to discover diverse specific situations in the vineyards. Placing special emphasis on this richness provided by the natural environment and our vinicultural philosophy, the originality of Artizar lies in having the freedom necessary each year to choose small areas and vinicultural details that are at times imperceptible, so they can express themselves to the full in this new Txakoli: a stunningly complex wine, that will leave you lingering.
